Scarce 1823 edition of Ann Radcliffe’s gothic classic; pocket-sized (although not a minature), with very small print, bound in patterned boards, and with nice frontispiece engraving titled ‘Almeyda Castle’; b&w illustration to title page; text block untrimmed; heavy foxing to prelims, apparent removal (possibly of name-label) to front endpaper (with two small worn spots resulting), worn patch to front pastedown, general foxing/tanning to pages throughout, and with occasional stains, o.w. Good; worn patch to front board lower corner near spine; a pioneer of Gothic fiction, Ann Radcliffe is a legendary figure in English literature – the introduction to the Oxford World’s Classics edition states that in A Sicilian Romance “Ann Radcliffe began to forge the unique mixture of the psychology of terror and poetic description that would make her the great exemplar of the Gothic novel, and the idol of the Romantics”.
