Collection of cartoons by various Dutch cartoonists, published to mark the 40th anniversary (1919-1959) of G.H. Kayser Ltd, manufacturers of hard-wearing work clothing – as symbolised by the company logo of a worker’s outfit hoisting a barbell; all the cartoons employed in some way this motif; introduction by Dutch author Godfried Bomans (who has signed the intro in red ink, not to be confused with the facsimile signature which appears later); included here are two carbon copies of letters from company Directors W.J. and H.J. Kayser, addressed to US President Dwight Eisenhower, and Premier of the USSR Nikita Khrushchev (here as ‘Mr. N.S. Kroesjtjew’), both letters dated September 15 1959 and being more or less identical in content, detailing how one of the cartoons in the book depicts both world leaders jointly holding a barbell over their heads, each end of the barbell showing a world globe; September 1959 was of course the occasion of Khrushchev’s official visit to the U.S., the first time a Soviet head of state had received an invitation to the White House; this coincidence is noted in both letters; it appears that one copy each of the book was to be sent with the covering letter to both Eisenhower and Krushchev respectively; whether this ever took place can’t be verified; includes a list of the cartoonists to rear of text; blue cloth boards with gilt and blue titling, and barbell motif blind-embossed; boards a little sprung, some lifting/rippling of front pastedown, toning to edges of pages, o.w. Very Good.
