The complete run of 6 issues of Ern Malley’s Journal, Vol 1 Nos 1-4 [respectively November 1952, March 1953, October 1953, and November 1954], and Vol 2 Nos 1-2 [May and November 1955]; published sporadically, edited by Max Harris, John Reed and Barrie Reid, the journal attempted to carry on the spirit and legacy of Ern Malley, the hoax poet who became real, and ultimately defied his creators, assuming an immortal presence in Australian poetry and culture – “Who can doubt that he did in fact live” state the editors in the preface to the first issue; poetry, prose, and art, contributors included Harris, Joy Hester, Charles Osborne, Judith Wright, and Ern himself; art by Charles Blackman (front cover Vol 2 No 1), Robert Dickerson, George Williams, Arthur Boyd, Jean Langley – all illustrations in b&w; all issues side-stapled wraps, the first four with cover titling in facsimile handwriting, the remaining two with cover illustrations – by Blackman, and Ian Sime; Vols 1/2, 2/1, and 2/2 knocked to corners of text block, with creases resulting; some foxing to plate illustrations (and pages facing), occasional toning to edges of pages, o.w. all issues Good throughout; wraps rubbed, some tanning to edges, staples showing through to first four issues, and with a little rust to Vol 1 No 3; Vol 1 No 3 with creases and minor loss to spine, likewise Vol 2 No 2; overall a Good set of the scarce complete run.
