1st Edition of Johann Christian Poggendorff’s history of physics, based on his lectures delivered at University of Berlin; Poggendorff was an important German physicist, who edited the journal Annalen der Physik und Chemie for over 50 years, best known today for the Poggendorff Illusion (an optical illusion referencing the brain’s perception of diagonal lines and horizontal and vertical edges); illustrated with 40 text woodcuts; here bound in full contemporary calf with raised bands and six compartements to spine, maroon title label with gilt titling, and gilt devices; University College London circular motif in gilt to front board, suggesting a prize binding (prize plate partially removed front pastedown); marbled endpapers and text block; former owner’s name/inscription to front endpaper, prize plate partially (and awkwardly) removed/scratched over to front pastedown, endpapers and prelims foxed, o.w. Very Good throughout; leather a little rubbed, a little dulled to spine, vertical stain to rear.
