Very scarce signed copy of John H. Nicholson’s ‘Halek’, being an allegorical novel set in an imaginary world with religious/moral subtext, in the tradition of The Pilgrim’s Progress; 2nd Edition; inscribed to prelims ‘The Rev. J. Wilson Henry A slight token of the esteem in which he is held by the author John H. Nicholson 15-9-96’; Nicholson was the son of English scholar John Nicholson, he came to Australia at 16 where he worked as a teacher; prone to visions and eccentricities he wrote poetry and allegorical prose works, of which the best known are Halek and Almoni – the author intended to write a third novel ‘Lirusan’ to complete a trilogy, but incorporated this latter into Almoni; preliminary to the text appear reviews of the first edition of Halek, author’s preface, and ‘Key’ to some of the occult terms within; b&w frontispiece block of Nicholson with tissue-guard; heavy foxing to prelims, text block tanned, scattered foxing throughout, and with creases to some pages (one page with closed-tear and acid-free tape repair); boards rubbed, gilt titling dulled to spine.
