Late 19th-century edition of Robert Drury’s journal, describing his experiences on the island of Madagascar, where Drury was shipwrecked at the age of 17 and held captive there for fifteen years; the text is often attributed to Daniel Defoe, but critical opinion differs widely on this subject; numerous b&w plate illustrations, fold-out map; this copy with three-quarter leather, and marbled boards; ex-library with ‘Free Public Young Library’ in gilt to spine, and library number/label to spine, with no other library stamps etc in text; generally good throughout, with scattered foxing, and occasional offset to pages from old bookmarks; boards rubbed and scuffed, and with some shelfwear; leather a little worn at corners.
