Two unique Pugh’s Queensland Almanacs, being Arthur Hunter Palmer’s copies – not signed or otherwise pronounced, but each stamped to front board as belonging to the ‘President of the Legislative Council’ – 1883 copy – or simply ‘The President’ – 1892 copy (which we take to have the same designation); as Arthur Hunter Palmer was President of the Qld Legislative Council from 1881 -1898 we take it as unenterprising to assert these were his copies; Palmer was born in Ireland, emigrating in 1838, and serving as the 5th Premier of Queensland from 1870-1874; both Almanacs in black leather binding, the 1883 with gilt borders and decorations to front and rear boards, the titling to front board originally in gilt now rubbed and appearing blind-embossed, 6 compartments to spine with gilt titling, date and devices; 1892 edition with gilt borders front and rear, gilt titling to front board, 5 raised bands and 6 compartments to spine, with gilt titling, date and devices; all edges gilt; 1883 edition with 100 pages of advertisements to rear of text; 1892 Edition including a major section ‘The Queensland Directory for 1892, comprising the City of Brisbane, Its Suburbs, the Towns in the Colony; A Trades and Professional Directory of Queensland, and an Alphabetical List of Traders in the Colony’; 1883 Edition with scattered foxing (light-med throughout), heavy to text block; gilt gone from front board titling, leather rubbed and with worn patches to rear, o.w. Very Good; 1892 edition with pages a little browned, and with toning/tanning to edges, gate-fold with closed tear and minor edgewear, o.w. Very Good; leather a little rubbed and with minor worn spots, a little dulled to spine.
