11 issues of The Australian Journal of Education starting from Vol. 1 No. 2 Saturday February 1 1868 – Vol. 2 No. 1 Friday January 1 1869 (please note Vol 2 No 1 bound first, the 1868 issues in sequence thereafter – unfortunately Vol 1 No 1 is not present); the articles cover general subjects such as geology, science, mathematics, etc, with others more specific to Australian education in the late 19th-C, the training of teachers, aspects of the education system, superannuation, Australian fauna and flora, and so forth; includes one or two gate-fold charts providing Programmes of Lessons for various quarters of the school year; Very Scarce; The Australian Journal of Education was issued for only three years (1868, 1869, and 1870 – source: Trove), thus the current volume contains roughly 1/3 of all issues published, providing a first-hand account of the Australian education system pre-Federation; a publication of the same name resumes in 1957 and runs to the present day in digital form; binding is black leather with ornate gilt borders and lozenge to front board, gilt borders to rear, gilt titling and devices to spine, marbled endpapers; foxing throughout (from light-med-heavy), text block tanned and foxed, occasional pencil/ink annotations, significant loss to section of one of the gate-fold charts; boards rubbed, corners knocked, worn and scuffed to rear board.
