1st Edition 1853 of Harriet Martineau’s version of Comte’s Positive Philosophy, complete in two volumes; the title page states ‘Freely translated and condensed’, and this edition does have a reputation for being made palatable for the general reader; cloth boards with ornate designs blind-stamped, gilt titling to spines; both volumes with foxing to endpapers, and browning to text blocks, occasional mild stains, o.w. G-VG throughout; volume I sunned to spine, and with wear to hinges of boards, net-binding visible at joint of board and front endpaper; front board of volume II loose (barely holding to lower half), sunned to spine, 1 x 4cm loss to head of spine.
