2 Volume uniform set of Dante’s Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso (Hell, Purgatory and Paradise) in the Francis Cary translation, and with the illustrations of Gustave Dore – being 75 full-page b&w drawings and engravings (including a frontispiece portrait of Dante with tissue-guard) in Inferno, and 60 in Purgatorio and Paradiso; Cary also provides a Life of Dante, Chronology, and footnotes; Inferno with green boards with gilt titling, and ornate gilt device with coloured inlays to front, gilt titling to spine, all edges gilt, decorative endpapers; Purgatorio/Paradiso in brown boards with decorations and titling similar to Inferno; Inferno with gift-inscription and bookplate to front endpaper, fo’s name-stamp to prelims, med-heavy foxing to prelims (heavy to tissue-guard), scattered foxing throughout (light-med), front board a little loose (but holding firm) with net-binding visible, o.w. Good; boards a little rubbed, with some worn patches, coloured inlays dulled, gilt titling dulled to spine, mild edgewear to head and tail of spine; Purgatorio and Paradiso with former owner’s inscription to half-title page, foxing as per Inferno volume; front board a little loose (holding), worn patches to boards.
